Morocco’s Blue City: Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is a charming little town located 600 meters above sea level. It is called ‘the blue city’ because of its amazing medina (old city) painted in different shades of blue. One of the biggest charms of the city is its mix of Moroccan and Andalusian architecture. Note the red-tiled roofs or wooden sculptures. Its beauty is enhanced by the contrast between the medina and its surrounding environment.

Because the city is close to Tangier, it is easy to go on a day trip. I was fortunate enough to visit Chefchaouen before it became “Insta-famous”. The streets were empty and very few tourists had heard of it. It has now become a major tourist destination in the Instagram era. Each street has is a new photo backdrop for tourists and Instagrammers.
