Welcome to Diriyah, a historic gem located at the gates of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. This iconic site, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a unique experience where history, culture, and modernism meet in harmony. You’ll find restaurants, renovated traditional houses, and shops here. Visit of Diriyah and its most famous neighbourhood At-Turaif.
It was only on my third attempt that I finally managed to visit Diriyah. The site has been under restoration for several years, and I had managed to take a look when not everything was completely closed. On my second attempt, I was unable to enter the site and had to turn back with the taxi. On the third try, its doors were finally opened to me….
A journey through time: Diriyah’s legacy
Diriyah is the cradle of the Saudi dynasty and plays a crucial role in the kingdom’s history. Founded in the 15th century, this historic citadel was once the seat of the first Saudi state and the home of the Al Saud dynasty, the ruling family.
Diriyah is divided into several neighbourhoods, such as At-Turaif, Al-Bujairi, Al-Suraiha, and Ghasiba. The At-Turaif neighbourhood is the most iconic.
The historic At-Turaif district
Al-Turaif is the historic heart of Diriyah. In recognition of its exceptional historical value, the historic district was added on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 2010.
During my visit of Diriyah, most of the streets were still empty. Well, I admit it was May and very hot, which likely kept a lot of people away. However, before sunset, the area gradually fills up as the lamps are lit. Then the crowd heads to the restaurants and craft shops to spend the rest of the evening.
Diriyah, and especially the Al-Turaif neighborhood, is a living testament to historical architecture and life, even though the buildings have been renovated! It’s enjoyable to stroll through its charming alleyways and traditional houses, as well as around its imposing watchtowers
The buildings are typical of Najd architecture, the central region of Saudi Arabia, characterized by the use of mud bricks. There are also interior courtyards as well as watchtowers.
The Bujairi Terrace
The Bujairi Terrace brings together Michelin-starred restaurants and local Saudi brands in one place. What’s interesting is that these restaurants and cafes also reflect traditional Najdi architecture, in harmony with the historical style of Diriyah.
The Bujairi Terrace also offers a beautiful view of the historic At-Turaif site and its surroundings.
Like all new attractions, the place can get crowded. It’s a major new feature in Riyadh, so if you plan to dine there, I recommend making a reservation.
Does Diriyah deserve a visit?
Absolutely! Otherwise, I wouldn’t have added it to my site 🙂 Personally, I’m not a big fan of Riyadh. When I’m there, I prefer to escape from the shopping malls
It’s a must-visit if you’re in the Saudi capital. Diriyah is more than just a historical tour; it’s a journey through the rich and captivating history of Saudi Arabia. And if you, like me, appreciate traditional Najdi architecture, I also recommend visiting the historic village of Ushayqer.
