The Sarrazins Cave: A hidden gem above Annecy

It took me a while to write this article about the Sarrazins Cave, because this place has to be earned! Tucked away off marked trails with no signs to guide you, it’s not exactly easy to find. Many people get lost on the way, and the “paths” around it can quickly become dangerous if you’re not paying attention.

You can spot the Sarrazins Cave from afar, perched high above Lake Annecy. But don’t be fooled, even if it seems easy to locate from below, finding it on foot is another story. That said, it’s a stunning place, offering a breathtaking view over the lake. And in the late afternoon, as the sun begins to set, the cliffs and water light up with magical colors.

Starting the Hike to the Sarrazins Cave

The Sarrazins Cave is located above Veyrier-du-Lac, on the steep mountainside overlooking Lake Annecy. It’s part of the Grandes Suites climbing sector, a well-known spot for rock climbers in the region.

There are several ways to reach the cave, but the most common starting point is between house numbers 46 and 48 on Route de la Corniche. The trail begins at around 560 meters of elevation and climbs up to the cave at approximately 820 meters — a total elevation gain of about 260 meters. Expect the hike to take between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on your pace. To help you stay on track, I’ve included several photos of the trail below.

Useful tips to stay on the right path

The trail to the Sarrazins Cave starts from Route de la Corniche. You’ll walk alongside a field on your left. The gravel path climbs gently, nothing too steep in this first section.

At the first intersection, turn right, just after the buildings you’ll see on your left.

At the second intersection, stay alert, there are four possible paths. Don’t go left or right; just keep going straight ahead.

A bit further on, you’ll reach another spot with four more path options. This time, take the one on the left, it curves sharply uphill.

Continue straight until you see the cliff face and the rocks near the cave. The final turn is on the right, just before you reach the entrance.

The final stretch to the Cave

Just before reaching the cave, a short section with fixed cables along the rock face helps you cross a more exposed area. You won’t need any technical gear if you’re comfortable on steep terrain, but if you’re hiking with children, consider using a harness and lanyard for added safety.

The Sarrazins Cave

I’ve been there several times, but in my opinion, summer is the best season to visit. The sun is warm, the days are long, and you get a front-row seat for the sunset over the lake, it’s beautiful!

In winter, the atmosphere is completely different. The trail can get slippery, especially in shaded areas. One time, I even came across patches of black ice, so be careful if you’re heading up during the off-season!

Where does the name “Sarrazins” come from?

The name Sarrazins (sometimes spelled Sarrasins) appears in many place names across France, especially in mountainous areas or near caves. In the Middle Ages, the term was used to describe Muslim populations from North Africa, Spain, or the Middle East. According to local legend, the Sarrazins Cave may have once been used as a hideout or refuge.

Climbing at Grandes Suites: A paradise for rock climbers

My father, an experienced alpinist, had been telling me about the Sarrazins Cave for years. The first time I finally made it there, I understood why. The Grandes Suites crag, where the cave is located, is also an incredible climbing spot. The cliff is stunning and airy, with an unbeatable view over Lake Annecy.

If you’re into climbing, this is one of the most beautiful spots around Annecy. With over 100 routes ranging from 5a to 8b, spread across several sectors, there’s something for every level. The limestone rock offers a variety of styles and profiles, all set in a beautiful setting.

Heading back from the Sarrazins Cave

The return follows the same trail back down. I’d recommend not starting too late, unless you’re up for a headlamp hike on the way back!
