The hike to the Croix du Chef-Lieu offers a stunning panorama of Lake Annecy. Located in the Semnoz region of the Bauges Massif, it is easily accessible with a trail leading to the cross in less than an hour. Since it’s a quick hike, I often revisit it when friends come to visit Annecy. I use the term “hike” because it’s not just a leisurely stroll!
Instead of showcasing summer photos, I have chosen to present the Croix du Chef-Lieu hike with images taken recently at the end of autumn. Lake Annecy and its surroundings are a year-round destination 🙂

Departure of the Hike
I recommend parking near the Sevrier church. From there, cross the road and follow the path to Forbach via the Leschaux Pass road. At the end of the Forbach path, you will find the entrance to the forest. Soon, a sign will indicate the way to the Croix du Chef-Lieu.
Itinerary
This is not a very long hike, but the ascent is steep. It’s easy to get lost in the Semnoz, but don’t worry—the path to the cross is very well marked. After a few minutes of walking, you will come across a sign for “La Combe” (alt 520m). This sign indicates that the Croix du Chef-Lieu is 50 minutes away.

In autumn, the leaves cover the stones, and the path can be quite slippery. In summer, the view of the lake is obscured by vegetation. However, this has its advantage: once you reach the Croix du Chef-Lieu, a very lovely surprise awaits the hiker!

The Croix du Chef-Lieu
The final sign (Chalet de Barbenoire, 770 m) indicates that the Croix du Chef-Lieu is 100 m to the left.

Overlooking the centre of Sevrier, the panorama is stunning. In the foreground is the lake, followed by the beautiful surrounding mountains: the Bornes/Aravis ranges, Mont Veyrier, Mont Baron, the Dents de Lanfon, Lanfonnet, and the highest peak, La Tournette

The cross was installed by a group of volunteers who, each year, maintain and clear the crosses in the Semnoz to ensure the panorama remains visible. Be cautious not to get too close to the edge as the area is not secured.

In summer, the lake’s colour is impressive. The turquoise accentuates the deep blue even more. I returned several times in autumn, and the lake had not lost its beautiful hues.

The Semnoz
The lake can only be admired near the crosses, as the Semnoz is heavily wooded. The Croix du Chef-Lieu is situated above Sevrier town centre, from which it gets its name (centre: “chef-lieu”).

Unlike what one might expect, the view from the top of the Semnoz is not more open. This is due to the vegetation, which means that Lake Annecy is not fully visible. However, the mountain offers very beautiful views of the surrounding peaks, including the majestic Mont Blanc. Head to Crêt de Châtillon, the highest summit of the Semnoz (1702 m). For more hiking ideas in the Semnoz, check the Parc des Bauges website.
What to do after visiting the Croix du Chef-Lieu?
Once you’ve enjoyed the beautiful panorama, you have two options: either return via the same trail or continue to the Croix du Crêt via the Crête trail.

How long does it take to hike up the Croix du Chef-Lieu?
This is always a challenging question to answer, as the duration depends on various factors. Not everyone walks at the same pace. An average walker is said to cover about 300 metres per hour. I walk quickly, but I constantly stop to take photos. I have climbed to the Croix du Chef-Lieu several times. Generally, even with walkers slower than me, we’ve never taken more than 35-40 minutes. The last time I went up to the Croix du Chef-Lieu was with my father. We took about 20 minutes. He was waiting patiently while I was gasping for breath! (Thanks, Covid lockdown!)
