Most travellers visiting the Grey Mare’s Tail in Galloway Forest Park stop at the first waterfall, unaware that a whole series of waterfalls lies just beyond. Tucked away near Talnotry, close to Newton Stewart, this lesser-known trail rewards those who venture a little further with breathtaking views, peaceful forest paths, and a touch of mystery 🙂
Where to Start: The Grey Mare’s Tail Car Park
To explore the Talnotry waterfalls in Galloway Forest Park, start your walk at the Grey Mare’s Tail car park. There’s no parking fee, making it a convenient and accessible point to begin the trail to the Waterfalls of Grey Mare’s Tail Burn.

The waterfall trail follows the Grey Mare’s Tail Burn. It is a scenic stream that goes through an ancient forest. As you walk, the path gradually reveals a series of cascading waterfalls.

Faith, Rosie & Grey Mare’s Tail: Waterfalls to Hike in Galloway Forest Park
Most people stop at the Grey Mare’s Tail Waterfall, but keep following the trail uphill and you’ll discover 2 more waterfalls, each one worth the climb.
Grey Mare’s Tail
The most well-known and easily accessible. It’s accessible from both sides of the stream, which makes it great to have different photography angles.

Faith Waterfall
A quieter, almost meditative spot, perfect for a break. You can also go swimming there as it has a nice pool.

Rosie’s Waterfall
Found higher up along the burn, it’s an easier hike than expected and offers a surprisingly spectacular view.

The Grey Mare’s Tail Burn waterfalls trail is located near Black Loch, a good spot for bird watching.
It might be tempting to stop at Rosie’s Waterfall, the third in the series, but if you continue uphill along an even narrower path, you’ll catch a glimpse of the final waterfall. The vegetation can be quite dense in summer, partially obscuring the view.

The upper parts of the trail can become steep and narrow, and at times the path is rough. I decided against trying to go higher as the path was very narrow and damaged.
Ruins & Stone Faces

Ruined stone structures
Male sure to look out for hidden faces carved into the stones, “The Quorum”. It’s a series of stone sculptures resembling silent faces.
Grey Mare’s Tail Burn waterfalls trail is a hidden gem in southwest Scotland. If you’re travelling through Newton Stewart or exploring Galloway Forest Park, don’t just stop at the first cascade, follow the burn, climb a little higher, and discover these beautiful waterfalls.
If you’re planning a trip through Dumfries and Galloway, don’t miss some of the region’s other hidden gems. I’ve explored this beautiful corner of Scotland extensively, from Kennedy Castle Gardens, to Logan Botanical Garden, and the charming coastal village of Portpatrick. Each destination offers its own atmosphere and makes for a perfect addition to your Galloway itinerary.
